The designer to watch: Joe Richards

The man who made a shirt for Patti Smith is building his brand with a blend of androgynous utility styling and a sense of luxury

BY Georgia Dehn | 04 March 2015

Joe Richards started his own label three years ago with what he says was ‘an impulsive and instinctive’ decision: to create a shirt for Patti Smith.

In June 2012 Smith was coming to perform in Bath, Richards’s hometown, and he designed for her a white shirt with a double layer at the front, which he sent to her publicist before the gig. Richards went to the show, but she wasn’t wearing it. « That didn’t matter to me, » he says. « It was just that I wanted to connect with something bigger than myself. »

Richards has no idea whether Smith even saw the shirt, but it was the best gig he has ever been to and he has produced the ‘Patti’ shirt as part of every collection since he established his eponymous label for the autumn/winter 2013 season.

His androgynous line of daywear (‘this brand is about utility, but at the same time a sensual luxury’) is at present stocked exclusively at Matches Fashion.
